Talking to God
"Tongues is a direct line. When you pick up the phone, it goes right to God."
~ Dr. Kevin L. Zadai
For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.
—1 Corinthians 14:2
DISCUSSION:
Jesus was the representation of the Father. He only said what the Father was saying, and He only did what the Father was doing. The disciples had Jesus, and He was the exact image of God on the earth. They would encounter God every time they talked with Jesus. Jesus said, "If you've seen me, you've seen the Father" (see John 14:9).
As believers of Jesus and children of God, we have the Holy Spirit. Jesus said, "When I go I will send you another comforter to be with you forever" (see John 14:16, 26). We can talk to God, and He can speak with us, as though He is right there. Even if we don't hear anything back from Him, He still hears us. Jesus said to God, "I know you always hear me, and I'm doing this for their benefit." Just as we can have a dialogue with our earthly father, we can have a conversation with our Heavenly Father. We never cease to be sons or daughters. Our Dad is our Dad. It's the same with our Heavenly Father.
o Discuss what it means to be a son or a daughter of Father God.
In today's scripture, Paul is talking about speaking in unknown tongues unto God. When you speak in tongues in your private life and prayer life, you're speaking unto God. We are speaking mysteries to God and not to men. Certain teachers will say that tongues have been done away with, but, Paul says, that tongues won't cease until we have reached perfection. We have not obtained perfection yet. We are acquiring that perfection by praying in tongues. When perfection comes, we won't need tongues anymore. Right now, we need to prophesy and speak in tongues because we're not made perfect in love yet.
o In what ways do you communicate with the Lord? Do you speak in tongues? If not, do you desire to speak in tongues? Talk about the mysteries of God.
BAPTIZED IN THE HOLY SPIRIT
Jude 20,21: NKJV But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.
• Build yourself on the most holy of faith.
• Praying in tongues helps us remain in the love of God.
As Christians, we all should be baptized in the Holy Spirit with the initial evidence. The initial evidence in the Book of Acts is that every time the Holy Spirit fell on the people, they spoke in tongues. There's only one place in the Book of Acts where it doesn’t say they spoke in tongues, but it infers that they did in context.
All the other scriptures say that every time the Holy Spirit fell, they were baptized in the Holy Spirit, and they began to speak in another language and tongues. It's in your private prayer life that you can pray in tongues and talk to God. You want to build yourself up in the most Holy of faith in that time. In a public service, Paul said, so that everyone else around you can understand and engage with God, make sure that someone or you can interpret what you say, otherwise speak in the language of the assembly to build up the body of Christ.
o Why wouldn't more people want to speak in tongues if you are speaking directly to God?
If you're going to talk to God, this is how you do it. You don't just speak in your native language; you can speak in the spirit and say things understood by God if you allow the Holy Spirit to move and lead. Speaking in tongues isn’t thought provoked. You don’t do it from your mind but rather from yielding to the Spirit of God.
PRAYING IN TONGUES
Romans 8:26 TPT And in a similar way, the Holy Spirit takes hold of us in our human frailty to empower us in our weakness. For example, at times we don't even know how to pray, or know the best things to ask for. But the Holy Spirit rises up within us to super-intercede on our behalf, pleading to God with emotional sighs too deep for words.
Paul is saying, “I have a solution.” We don't always know what we should pray, but the Spirit knows. The Holy Spirit comes in our weakness and takes hold of us, and lifts us, and we have direct access to God. Through speaking in tongues, we can pray perfect prayers that come from the Holy Spirit, and He super-intercedes on our behalf. He causes us to do and say the right thing —to engage and talk with God with words formed in our spirit. These perfect prayers we pray might sound like groaning and grunts.
Different languages have distinctive sounds to them. There are hundreds of languages, but our spirit prays for us in these languages that the Father understands. Don't you think that because we have access to the Father this way that the enemy wouldn't want to stop it? The devil doesn't like it when people pray in tongues. He doesn't want us to walk in truth because he knows he can't win.
Speaking in tongues is one of the most disputed topics among religious people other than authority as a believer and Holy fire. There are many accusations and criticism about tongues. Even if people disagree with scripture, God provided these verses about speaking in tongues, and you can't just take them out of the Bible. You don't have the authority to do that. He put them in there for a reason, and it's not done away yet. Don't get into arguments about whether or not you believe in tongues but let this be about being built up and having a direct line to God.
